THREE & OUT - Week 9

By Joe Everett on Wednesday, 4th November 2009

three and outAlright Folks, It’s time for the latest installment of THREE & OUT. A weekly column featuring one of the bigger stories of the weekend, a nice pick up for your IDP league, a must-start matchup, and player that needs to be on your bench this upcoming week.

It was an unbelievable week 8 that saw a lot of my fantasy teams fall thanks to missed field goals, fumbling, and poor coaching decisions. Curtis Lofton continues his dominating season with another 10+ tackle performance on Monday Night against the Saints. Patrick Willis even defied the odds of a terrible matchup and still posted 7 total tackles against the Colts, proving that you never ever bench your studs. Of course our favorite IDP pikcup has been playing lights out the whole time and that’s George Wilson of the Bills, who just can’t stop racking up the tackles and is now one of the top safeties as far as tackle numbers on the season.

We fared very well last week, as our must sit was Larry Foote and he only mustered 3 measly solo tackles against the Rams. Thomas DeCoud notched a sack and forced fumble on the great Drew Brees and our other pikcup, Kaluka Miava, did get 5 total tackles in a terribly played game. Tim Dobbins didn’t show up like we expected but he was forced from the game due to injury, so we can’t really be held responsible for that one entirely.

Alrighty then, it’s time to fire up the latest edition of “3 & Out” and try to get a few more right for you folks this time around. . .

buf

LB Chris Draft - Buffalo Bills

I know that it seems like I’m always recommending a Bills player but I can’t help it. With an offense that is this ineffective and a tough schedule coming up, Chris Draft is sure to get a ton of tackles but that’s not the only reason. It looks like the Jills lost weak-side backer Keith Ellison to a quadriceps injury and while they have yet to update his status, Draft had a stellar game in his absense regardless of Pozluszny being back in the lineup. Buffalo’s situation is very IDP friendly but I think Draft actually fits the scheme a little bit better and he’s sure to get solid tackle numbers as the year goes on. Definitely worth a pickup in larger leagues.

sea

LB David Hawthorne - Seattle Seahawks

I know that you’re probably mad after I jumped all over the Hawthorne band-wagon earlier in the year but he’s simply the last good middle linebacker left on the roster and LeRoy Hill fits better on the weak-side. With both Hill and Hawthorne in the lineup, it’s actually the rookie Curry that will lose out on tackles. Hawthorne isn’t a good player by any stretch but he’s just good enough to keep his job and that’s what we love about him. He’ll be picked on by opposing offensive coordinators but it will result in great tackle numbers with starter Lofa Tatupu out for the year with a torn pectoral muscle. He’s a great pikcup in any tackle heavy league.

cle

LB David Bowens - Cleveland Browns

Another Cleveland Brown? YES, another Cleveland Brown because they’re a joke on offense and it results in plenty of time for their IDPers. The only reason I like Bowens is the injury to Eric Barton, who looks to be lost for the year after doctors revealed that he has a bulging disk in his neck. The Browns already lost starter D’Qwell Jackson for the year and rookie Kaluka Maiava can’t be trusted by himself just yet, so Bowens looks to get plenty of snaps. Bowens has a great chance at being a 2 to 3-down line backer with the Browns roster consistently losing people to injury. By simple attrition, Bowens stands to have a lot of IDP value.

hou

LB DeMeco Ryans - Houston Texans

I know it’s tough to do because DeMeco Ryans has to be your LB 1 or 2 but the Colts are one of the more stingy teams when it comes to surrendering points to opposing linebackers. In Fact, they give up the least amount to LBs of any NFL team. Factor that in with the freakish play of Brian Cushing on the outside and it shouldn’t be that difficult to swallow your IDP pride and leave DeMeco on your bench this week. If any player from Houston blows up this week, it will be Bernie Pollard with the Colts airing it out early and often.
