Alright Folks, It’s time for the latest installment of THREE & OUT. A weekly column featuring one of the bigger stories of the weekend, a nice pick up for your IDP league, a must-start matchup, and player that needs to be on your bench this upcoming week.
Another week in the NFL, another week of our boy-EEE David Hawthorne doing more with Lofa Tatupu’s spot than he has done in the last two years. With LeRoy Hill getting over a groin injury, rookie Aaron Curry, and Hawthorne filling in, teams are going after the middle of the field and it’s resulting in great numbers for Seattle’s LBs. Another highlight for the staff has been the play of Gerald Sensabaugh, who led the Cowboys in tackles on Sunday Night.
Speaking of guys we’ve been touting, old Bernard Pollard turned in one hell of a game against the Colts and it’s no-wonder as the Fort Wayne native was happy to be back in the Hoosier state for some home cooking. 9 solos, 3 assists, and 2 INTs catapulted his per game average off the charts but his teammate Brian Cushing was just as good, chasing Dallas Clark all over the field for 12 total tackles but we’ll have to do without them this week.
On that note, it’s time to find you some waiver players in the latest edition of “3 & Out”. . .
LB Brandon Siler - San Diego Chargers
With Kevin Burnett out with an ankle injury and Tim Dobbins nursing a sore knee, Brandon Siler is racking up the tackles for San Diego. While Stephen Cooper and Eric Weddle will continue to eat up a ton of opportunities, it looks like Siler is in a great position to have a lot of action filtered his way. I think it’s time to go ahead and put the former Florida Gator in your lineups if you’re in deeper tackle heavy leagues because teams will continue to run the ball directly at San Diego’s front 7, which is still not as stout as a playoff team should be.
LB Landon Johnson - Carolina Panthers
It’s time to take advantage of the injuries and this isn’t just some guy’s backup. Thomas Davis was in the fabled “Cat-Bird Seat”, playing weak-side linebacker in a cover-2 defense, and it’s no coincidence that he was leading the team in tackles from that spot. Enter veteran linebacker Landon Johnson, who has enough range and speed to be very effective playing from the will. The Purdue Boilermaker is a great pickup in any league beacuse of the terrific upside he boasts, as he’ll be an instant 3 down linebacker right off the bat and if he keeps the job, he’s going to be a great LB#2/3 in all formats with tackle numbers that should be VERY respectable.
LB Brandon Johnson - Cincinnati Bengals
Brandon, Landon? No this was not planned out and neither was Brandon Johnson playing any kind of significant role this year but due to injuries and ineffective play, the veteran continues to prove his worth. The big cause for the green light we’re giving him here is the fact that Keith Rivers was on crutches after the game and there’s also Rey Maualuga and his disappearing act from the stat sheet. Johnson has been producing the tackle numbers that the other LBs have not, outside of Dhani Jones. He’s definitely a good start this week, with Pittsburgh running the ball efficiently and keeping the Bengals on the field.
LB David Hawthorne - Seattle Seahawks
How does this guy keep getting on this report? I know I’ve got an unhealthy obsession with David Hawthorne but I want to warn fantasy owners, who I’ve recommended to pick this guy up, that he’s not necessarily in store for a good game against the Cardinals. Arizona doesn’t give up a lot of points to opposing linebackers and while Hawthorne has been great, the Cardinals go after the defensive backs with their terrific corps of wide receivers. I’m not saying the Hawthorne will get shut down, I’m just not expecting him to be his usually spectacular self.
