Alright Folks, It’s time for the latest installment of THREE & OUT. A weekly column featuring one of the bigger stories of the weekend, a nice pick up for your IDP league, a must-start matchup, and player that needs to be on your bench this upcoming week.
It’s starting to look like a mystery why Aaron Curry was drafted so much higher than Brian Cushing. The kid is just racking up all kinds of big plays and his tackle numbers have been uncanny. He’s been amazingly consistent, much to the chagrin of DeMeco Ryans owners out there who didn’t expect a big impact from the kid out of USC. It’s an amazing race between “The Cush” and Laurinaitis, one that’s keeping us IDP addicts watching feverishly.
We lost our boy Landon Johnson to a knee injury, Polomalu is still out, but it looks like Justin Durant will be making a return form his concussion. Don’t look for too much form Julius Peppers, as the Panthers have resorted to using him on obvious passing downs only. The fantasy football waiver is hard enough to get the hang of w/ all the injuries and goings on in the league but the IDP side of things is getting to the point of down right insanity!
On that note, it’s time to find you some waiver players in the latest edition of “3 & Out”. . .
DB Nick Harper - Tennessee Titans
It’s nice to see Nick Harper back in traction from injury and the stat sheet didn’t seem to mind either w/ Harper netting 6 solo tackles on Monday Night. He’s not a great corner by any stretch of the imagination but he IS a guy that teams tend to pick on regularly. He does move well in space but he has lapses in coverage, as he’s a much better suited to the cover-2. Granted, he’s not worth it if you’re already starting a Danieal Manning or Roman Harper type but if you need an extra DB, this guy’s per game average numbers are very respectable in tackle heavy formats. He’s going to be consistently challenged in a division that features terrific WRs(Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, and Mike Sims-Walker just to name a few), so there’s definitely a place for Harper on your IDP squad.
LB Dan Connor - Carolina Panthers
I hate to be a total vulture but Dan Connor is the pickup thanks to a Landon Johnson injury. With Johnson out of the way, Connor figures to be first in line for the opening at weak-side linebacker and, as discussed in a previous version of this column, it’s a gold-mine of fantasy proportions. In Ron Meeks’ cover-2 system, JohnDan Connor will be freed up to make plays in the middle of the field and with the Carolina Panthers’ weak front four, there will be plenty of plays that reach the second level of the defense. While Connor is not the same guy that was in the terminator movies, he is an alumn of Penn State and he’s a decent athlete, so I expect him to take advantage of this opportunity. Definitely a nice pick-up for your deeper IDP leagues.
LB Brad Jones(GBP) @ Detroit Lions
Speaking of great opportunities, Brad Jones has a golden opportunity to solidify a spot for himself next season if he can take advantage of this Aaron Kampman injury. Kampman is almost certain to be with another team in 2010 and Jones is a 7th round rookie with a lot to prove. I’m not saying “pick this guy up and reap the rewards” but he should be in store for a good game against a suspect Detroit Lions team on Thanksgiving that features a make-shift offensive line that hasn’t been able to block anybody. Jones figures to be playing in a lot more pass rushing situations as well as early down work, so give him a go if you’re in need of an injury replacement or match-up play this week.
LB DeAndre Levy(DET) vs Green Bay Packers
Yup! Nobody has been flaunting or touting DeAndre Levy more than me, except for the possibility of Mr Shawn McKeown, but I’m not liking the match-up and it’s the amount of pts Green Bay has been giving up to LBs. They’re giving up the least amount of Fantasy Points to LBs in the league. Not only that but veteran Julian Peterson has really come on as of late with 28 total tackles in the last 5 games. Levy has done a great job of holding his own and while it’s amazing that he’s holding his own as a starter, it’s still not enough to bank your fantasy week on in what I think is a suspect match-up. I’m leaving my boy Levy on the bench this week for greener pastures later in the year.
